The discoveries recorded in biologist J. Michael Fay's Megatransect through central Africa brought needed park protection to hidden wonders like the Ivindo River's Mingouli Falls. The lack of roads has kept such areas shielded from development, but pressure from the logging industry is building. —Text adapted from "Saving Africa's Eden," September 2003, National Geographic magazine
amíg vadhúst pácoltok, csak félig OFF:)
pont a lényeges rész maradt ki :o) "strong outer hair for the warp and downy inner wool for the weft."
"Woolen sails for replica ships start with the roundup on Jens Jakobsoy island of freerange sheep belonging to an ancient Norwegian breed. Per Johnson and his family pull the wool by hand—strong outer hair for the warp and downy inner wool for the weft. Tar and fat are added to the woven fabric to create water-resistant, wind-tight square sails like those carved on Viking picture stones." —From "In Search of Vikings," May 2000, National Geographic magazine
"A shrine and shopping center for the twenty centuries: The Great Buddha at Bamian, northwest of Kabul, is a colossal monolith higher than Niagara-falls, and was a Central Asia rendezvous for pilgrims and traders in the first century. Now motor cars are frequently parked around the bazaar at the feet of the towering statue."

"Not snow, nor heat, nor gloom of night but a rain-induced sewer backup stayed delivery of some 30,000 pieces of Des Moines mail. 'I think we bought every clothespin in town,' says postal worker Lora Yahnke, who helped sort and dry the wet mail in a garage. Such jury-rigging kept most city services afloat." —From "Riding Out the Worst of Times," January 1994, National Geographic magazine
a fotozz.hu-n úgyis lehúznák õket:)

Tourism has fed Thailand's economy for many years yet now casts a dark shadow on the environment. "To get flour from the rain forest, Asik, headman of a band of Penan nomads, tramples pulp from the sago palm as his wife adds water. Strained through a rattan mat, the pasty starch is collected and dried into powder. The nomad's staple food, sago is plentiful in Gunung Mulu National Park. Elsewhere in the forest, loggers plow down the palms to get at larger timber. The resulting underbrush—tangled and over-grown from direct sunlight—makes the remaining palms often difficult to reach."
