BERETTA: 'GOING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY'
‘The Italian Cup will be an opportunity for some players to perform – said coach Beretta – if they do well then they will be considered for future games as well. Inter are a great team and therefore we will have to play every card in our hand. They have the advantage, but we can’t start by already thinking that we have lost. Playing in a national competition could be gratifying and could help the team’s morale…’
Mario Beretta how do you view Wednesday’s Italian Cup match? ‘I think it is a positive thing and we will do our best to honor this competition. Naturally those that play less will be give a chance to play, to gain experience, especially the young players. We still have some injured players and others that are unavailable. We will try to find the right mix…’
Which players aren’t available? ‘Bresciano still has the same problem with his ankle that he had before Parma-Udinese; Marchionni’s ankle is swollen due to a injury he suffered on Sunday; Bolano is disqualified; Couto still has the usual foot problem; we are still missing Bonera, Dessena, Delvecchio, Pisanu and Ferronetti; Cannavaro is the only one that has recovered and now he must be evaluated to see if he can play from the start or for only part of the game; Coly could make an appearance, so that he will get some continuity and conditioning.’
What advice can you give your players on the eve of this game? ‘I can suggest that we take to the field with the right spirit, the same one that we had in Milan. We played well during that game because we had the desire and that is exactly the desire we must always have in both the championship and the Italian Cup. We don’t have a full coffer of points and this should be a stimulus. The past is behind us now. We must make some points and we can only do this through our performnce. We must work with our best effort and intensity.’
Is your objective to pass this round? ‘I don’t know what kind of lineup Macini will put on the field, but each one of the players that he has available are talented. Inter are a great team and therefore we will have to play every card in our hand. They have the advantage, but we can’t start by already thinking that we have lost. Playing in a national competition could be gratifying and could help the team’s moral. We need to take to the field trying to do our best. The Italian Cup will be an opportunity for some players to perform and if they do well then they will be considered for future games as well.’
‘If you don’t count halftime, then we conceded two goals in three minutes – said Parma coach Mario Beretta – Maybe we would have lost just the same, but if we had gone into halftime at 0-0 there would have been a psychological difference. In addition, upon returning to the field with the intent to tie, we immediately conceded a goal…’
Mario Beretta, Parma’s performance wasn’t as convincing as it was last Sunday at the San Siro…
‘We didn’t do that well. It wasn’t easy to play against such a team, but we should have done better. As for effort, the team did as well as they could. We didn’t create a lot of attacking opportunities in the first or second half. We conceded two goals in three minutes, if you don’t count halftime. Udinese played very well. Their first goal was absolutely beautiful. Even your opponent’s achievements must be acknowledged.’
Did Morfeo exit because of an injury?
‘He had problems with his knee before and it took a painful hit during the game. But, the pain has passed…’
Coly played his first game and Bolano returned after more than two months…
‘Coly was very tired at the end. He probably needs to reacclimatize. Bolano did well. He is still not in peak condition, but that is to be expected after such an absence.’
Parma are always almost safe from relegation…
‘We know that we are going to have to fight until the end. We must lift our heads and start again. I am convinced that this team can reach our objectives.'
If Parma are able to defeat Reggina away from home, as they did last year, then will still be in the fight to avoid relegation…
‘We are going there to take home the three points. The championship is still very long and the separation is therefore not abysmal. I don’t think that the teams that have more points than us feel safe from every surprise. We are going to Reggina to try and win.
How are you managing this situation?
‘Just as we always have, we are working on the field just as we always have. We knew that we would have to face a great team and now that is over. We must learn from our mistakes, continue, work and improve.’
Is Delvecchio’s absence the most important one?
‘Everyone’s absence is felt because we need each of our players.
