An industry first 32bit bus 2-channel RIMM4200
* 4.2GBps(gigabytes per second) Speed Operation
* 50% reduction in Memory channel cost
* Efficiency grows in proportion to the Multi Channel Memory density
* Introduction of Small Form Factors for high-performance systems
Seoul, Korea – May 30, 2002: Samsung Electronics, the world’s leading memory solutions provider, announces a 32bit RIMM4200 module, an industry first high-speed RDRAM module. The new module has a 2-channel feature boasting record operating speeds of 4.2gigabytes per second (GBps). This is 4X faster than a conventional SDRAM module and 2X the performance of DDR SDRAM module.
Present RDRAM based PCs are found with single channel modules that has at least two modules working as a pair. In contrast, the RIMM4200 module provides the same performance with only a single module, greatly reducing required number of parts such as sockets and continuity RIMM on the motherboard. Moreover, the new module easily facilitates memory upgrades for the end users.
"The ASUS P4T533 with RIMM4200 support, optimizes the design of the RDRAM channel in a smaller layout area to significantly increase the channel characteristics of the system.” said Jerry Shen, Vice President of ASUSTeK Computer Inc. ”Its innovative design decreases overall system costs by enabling a 4-layer motherboard with the flexibility to use single RIMM configurations.”
The RIMM4200 Module has an advantage of providing optimal memory granularity for high-performance PCs and workstations. Memory performances using DDR/SDR module for these high-speed applications requires a 128bit wide data bus. The increased data bus width makes it hard to install and upgrade the memory due to the limited densities. The RIMM4200 Module is capable of 4.2GBps but features fine granularity densities of 64MB, 128MB, 256MB and 512MB.
" After 512Mb/1Gb density DRAM devices will be prevalent due to bit growth driven by server applications and cost efficient 300mm fabs. However, to meet 128Mb memory bus requirements in high performance systems, memory upgrade of 512MB/1GB granularity maybe economically unfeasible. Said Jon Kang, Sr. Vice President of Samsung Electronics Memory Division. “A key feature for Samsung’s 32bit RIMM4200 is the fine granularity for successful application in high performance memory upgrade needs."
The RIMM4200 module provides performance of 4.2GBps with 2 slots, an attractive solution in the small form factor system in which many devices are required in a minimum area.
In addition, two RIMM4200 modules, in parallel, presented in a 64bit data bus system will generate speeds of 8.4GBps. Thus highlighting emphasizing the Rambus DRAM solution as a driving force in the high-performance memory market.
Samsung Electronics remains committed to the RDRAM as it is expected to continue to establish its position as a high-performance solution for high-end PCs and workstations in the 2nd half of 2002. The company plans to drive cost reduction and productivity by initiating mass production of 256Mb and 288Mb devices on 0.13um geometry in the 1st half of this year. Densities of 576Mb and higher devices are introduced in the company roadmap for future memory solutions.
The market requires timely introduction of advanced memories and Samsung plans to establish RDRAM as an optimal choice for high-performance memories not only for PC and workstations but other diverse applications.
